How to keep gold plated jewelry shiny?
Shine on gold plated jewelry is a surface property, so it stays bright when the plating is shielded from abrasion, moisture and chemicals. Wipe the piece with a soft dry cloth after every wear, keep it away from water and cosmetics, and store it sealed and separate. Done consistently, an 18K gold plated piece keeps its luster far longer than most buyers expect.
A dry microfiber cloth after each wear removes the film that makes gold look flat.
What actually dulls the shine
Gold plating is a thin gold alloy layer over base metal, so brightness depends on the top few microns staying clean and unscratched.
Skin oils and fingerprints
A thin film of sebum scatters light, so gold reads as dull even when the plating is intact.
Perfume, lotion and hairspray
Alcohol and oils leave residue and soften the protective finish, especially against skin all day.
Water, sweat and chlorine
Moisture pools in micro-scratches and speeds up tarnish, so a ring worn in the shower loses gloss first.
Friction and harsh cloths
Tissue paper and gritty polish create fine scratches; enough of them and the surface stops reflecting cleanly.
Bright, even reflections show the plating surface is still smooth.
A five-minute routine that protects luster

Wear it last, take it off first
Put jewelry on after makeup and hair products dry, and remove it before bed so it is not pressed against skin all night.

Wipe, do not scrub
A dry microfiber cloth, light pressure, ten seconds per piece. Skip toothpaste, baking soda and rough sponges, which dull plating.

Keep it dry on purpose
Showers, pools, the gym and washing dishes cloud a plated finish fastest. Remove the piece first, every time.

Store sealed and separate
One pouch per piece, closed against humid air, with an anti-tarnish strip. Chains stored loose scratch themselves and each other.
Separate compartments stop chains rubbing and keep humid air away.
Bringing the glow back
If the surface looks flat, work gently before assuming the plating is worn through. Wash with lukewarm water and a drop of mild soap, brush textured areas for thirty seconds, rinse, then pat completely dry. Never store a piece while damp.
If color has thinned at high-friction points such as a ring's inner edge or a bracelet clasp, polishing will not restore it; the layer needs attention. Our own house standard for 18K gold plating over brass is 0.1 to 0.3 micron, a controlled in-house specification rather than an industry-wide figure, and custom plating thickness is available on request.

Can toothpaste clean gold plated jewelry?
No. It is abrasive and leaves micro-scratches that dull the surface, even if it lifts dirt.
Is an ultrasonic cleaner safe?
Not for plated pieces. Vibration can lift thin plating at edges and around stone settings, so hand washing is safer.
Why does my ring look dull after a week?
Usually a film of hand cream or natural oils, not damaged plating. A dry cloth wipe brings the shine back.
How thick is your plating?
Our own standard is 0.1 to 0.3 micron of 18K gold over brass. Thicker plating can be quoted, and 18K plated custom runs start at 120 pieces per design.
