Cubic zirconia (CZ) is one of the easiest stones in fashion jewelry to care for. The stone itself is hard and scratch-resistant (about 8.5 on the Mohs scale), so daily wear rarely damages it. What dulls CZ is what sits on top of it: soap film, lotion, and skin oils block light return. CZ care is less about protecting the stone and more about keeping it clean - and protecting the plating that holds it.

  Mix a few drops of mild dish soap into lukewarm water - never hot water on plated settings.

  Soak the piece for 5 to 10 minutes so the film on the stones softens.

  Brush gently with a soft toothbrush, working from behind the stone where dirt collects under the pavilion.

  Rinse in clean lukewarm water, pat dry with a lint-free cloth, and air-dry fully before storing.

Repeat weekly for daily-wear rings; every 10 to 15 wears is enough for earrings and pendants.

What to Keep CZ Jewelry Away From

• Chlorine and bleach. Pool chemicals weaken alloys and dull surfaces - remove jewelry before swimming.

• Abrasive cleaners. Toothpaste and baking soda are too harsh for plated finishes; they leave micro-scratches that trap grime.

• Ultrasonic cleaners. CZ survives vibration, but shaking can loosen settings on plated pieces. Hand cleaning is safer.

• Perfume and hairspray. Follow the last-on, first-off rule: fragrance and styling products go on before jewelry.

Storing CZ Jewelry Correctly

Store CZ pieces separately in soft pouches or individual compartments. CZ is harder than most plated metals and glass, so a loose stone can scratch neighboring jewelry. Wipe each piece dry before storing so oils do not sit on the surface.

The Plated Setting Is the Delicate Part
