How to care for 18K gold plated jewelry?

Treated well, 18K gold plated jewelry keeps its warm, just-new color far longer than people expect. The gold layer is real gold, but it is thin - our own standard is 0.1 to 0.3 micron of 18K gold over a brass base, a house specification rather than an industry-wide figure - so friction, moisture and chemicals age a piece, not the calendar.

Daily habits that protect the gold layer

Put jewelry on last and take it off first. Perfume, hairspray and lotion dull a plated finish, so let them settle before rings go on. Remove pieces before showering, swimming, gym and housework; chlorine, salt and detergent are far harsher than plain water. Sweat is mildly acidic: after a workout, wipe with a soft lint-free cloth so oils do not sit on the surface overnight.

How to clean it safely

A gentle monthly clean is enough for regularly worn pieces. Dampen a soft cloth with lukewarm water and one drop of mild soap, wipe the metal, then go over it with a cloth dampened in clean water and dry immediately. Never scrub, and skip toothpaste, baking soda and ultrasonic machines - they are made for solid metal and will cut into a plated surface. Let the piece air-dry before storing it; sealing in trapped moisture is how tarnish starts under the plating.

Storage: dry, dark and separated

Store pieces dry and apart. A fabric-lined box with individual slots, or one sealed pouch per piece, stops scratching and slows oxidation. Keep them out of the bathroom: steam and humidity dull plating early. In humid climates, a silica-gel sachet in the drawer does more than any polish.
