Can CZ stones fall out over time?
Short answer: yes, any set stone - including cubic zirconia (CZ) - can loosen and eventually fall out over time. In normal daily wear it is uncommon when the setting is well made. The stone is rarely the problem: CZ is hard and durable, and what keeps it in place is the quality of the setting around it.
Why a CZ stone can loosen over time
CZ does not wear out the way a coating does - the setting does the failing. Four causes account for most lost stones:
Impact and snagging
A hard knock can bend a prong or dent a bezel edge, leaving the stone free to move and eventually drop out.
Chemical exposure
Perfume, chlorine and harsh cleaners slowly attack the finish and, in glue-set designs, the adhesive film beneath the stone.
Loose initial setting
Prongs that were never fully closed, or uneven bead tension in pavé work, let the stone work loose with everyday vibration.
Metal fatigue
Years of flexing, friction and temperature swings can gradually relax the metal gripping the stone - one reason older pieces deserve a periodic check.
Does the setting type matter?
Yes - it matters more than the stone. A bezel wraps the full edge of the stone and is the most secure option; prong settings show more of the stone but need occasional checks; pavé and channel settings rely on many small beads or rails of metal, so their tolerances are tighter. Glue-only settings are the weakest link and best avoided for daily wear.

How to keep CZ stones in place longer
Avoid hard impact. Remove rings and bracelets for sports, gym sessions and heavy manual work.
Chemicals last. Put jewelry on after perfume and lotion, and take it off before swimming or cleaning.
Check periodically. If a stone rattles or a prong looks lifted, stop wearing the piece and have it re-set early.
Store separately. A soft pouch or individual bag stops pieces scratching each other and prongs catching on chains.
How durable is a CZ stone itself?
CZ ranks around 8.5 on the Mohs hardness scale - harder than most gemstones except diamond, sapphire and ruby. It resists everyday scratching well, but a sharp blow can chip it. In practice the setting usually gives way before the stone does.
Which setting holds a CZ most securely?
A full bezel, because it encircles the entire stone edge. Prong settings show more of the stone but expose more claw area to snagging.
Can a loose CZ stone be repaired?
Usually, yes. If the stone is still in place, a jeweler can re-tighten the prongs or re-seat the bezel. If it has been lost, matching CZ replacements are widely available and inexpensive.
