How do I avoid reflections on gold-plated metal?
Gold-plated surfaces are mirror-like, so they copy whatever is around them - your face, the window, the camera. The fix is never "more light"; it is controlled, diffused light. A lightbox or photography tent turns hard reflections into an even, soft glow.
Diffuse before you add light
Place the jewelry inside a light tent or in front of a large diffuser (tracing paper or a softbox). Hard light sources become soft gradients on the metal, and you stop seeing the camera in the ring. Two equal lights at 45 degrees front-left and front-right give balanced, predictable highlights.
A matte surface like velvet or a non-reflective stone slab also absorbs stray bounce that would otherwise create hot spots.
Fill, polarize, and angle
Use a white card as a fill reflector to open shadows without adding a second reflection. A circular polarizing filter on a macro lens can kill residual glare on metal. Finally, shoot slightly above the piece and tilt it so the only thing reflected is your clean background, not the room.
Common reflection mistakes
- Direct on-camera flash - creates one harsh white blowout.
- Shooting on a glossy table - doubles every reflection.
- Colored walls nearby - tint the gold tone unexpectedly.
- Skipping a tripod - tiny angles shift where the highlight lands.
Our studio controls these variables for the full in-stock range so wholesale buyers receive consistent, glare-free images. Talk to our team about bulk image requests.
Quick answers
Q: Why does my gold look white in photos?
A: Blowout from direct light. Diffuse it and lower exposure until the metal reads as gold, not white.
Q: Does a polarizer really help?
A: Yes on a macro lens - it suppresses residual specular glare on plated metal.
Q: Best surface to avoid bounce?
A: Matte velvet, stone, or a light tent floor; avoid glass and polished wood.
